AI Blog: Comparing AIs

22 November 2024

Welcome back to our AI blog.  Today, we compare some of the AI tools available.

As mentioned in our previous blog, we’ll be focusing on generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots such as Microsoft Copilot, Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.  Each of these tools serve a similar purpose, but let’s take a look at the differences between them.

Copilot

Copilot is Microsoft’s AI chatbot, accessible at https://copilot.microsoft.com/ as well as within Microsoft 365 apps (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Microsoft Teams) with a subscription to Microsoft 365 Copilot.  Copilot is built on the same architecture as ChatGPT leading to a similar experience when using the two through the browser.  However, using Copilot through the Microsoft applications allows it to interact with them directly to create content (in applications like Word or PowerPoint) or data analysis (in Excel).

Copilot is free to use on the web, with Microsoft 365 Copilot costing US$30 per user per month in addition to an Office 365 license.  Copilot Pro is also available (US$20 per month) and provides priority access to the latest AI models, higher usage limits and early access to new features.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s AI chatbot, accessible at https://chatgpt.com/.

ChatGPT may also be used for free, with the Plus plan costing US$20 per month and granting early access to new features, higher usage rates and additional AI models.  A Team plan (not to be confused with “Teams”) is also available, granting all of the features in Plus as well as additional tools and higher usage rates.

Gemini

Gemini is Google’s AI chatbot, accessible at https://gemini.google.com/.  As with ChatGPT and Copilot, the base version is free to use.

Gemini Advanced is available as part of the Google One AI Premium plan (US$19.99 per month) and grants access to later AI models and priority access to new features, as well as allowing Gemini to process more information at once.

Come back next time for a more in depth look at the different features of each of these AI tools!
