Challenges: Final Friday Fix: May 2019 Challenge

On the final Friday of each month, we’re going to set an Excel challenge for you to puzzle over so that you can get your “Excel fix”. Challenge your office colleagues to see who can solve the puzzle quickest. There’s no prizes at this stage, you’re playing for bragging rights only!


Centre Across Selection

You may be aware of the basic concept of Centre Across Selection – the ability to make it look like a group of cells has been merged and centered for the purposes of displaying a result.

The advantage of using Centre Across Selection is that the cells are not actually merged, meaning that they can be appropriately formatted and styled, as well as not running into common issues when trying to navigate and copy/paste around merged cells.

However, one common feature that is frequently complained about as being missing from Excel is to be able to do the same thing vertically without merging the cells:
