Datasets Renamed Semantic Models
16 November 2023
Datasets are being renamed “semantic models” in Power BI and Fabric. This might seem like a semantic point (!) but it is necessary for disambiguation from other Fabric items and will make the product clearer and more usable. You will see this change in the most prominent user interface (UI) elements and Microsoft has stated that the documentation is presently being updated.
Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are not currently affected as Microsoft will progressively roll out further changes. The timing of this change is driven by the upcoming General Availability of Fabric and aligns with the rename for Machine Learning (ML) models. It reflects the immense progress that Power BI datasets have made in becoming an enterprise-grade semantic modelling technology. The semantic model name will help drive awareness of the new powerful capabilities provided.
As always, we'll be detailing these updates in our December newsletter. Please remember we have virtual / online training in Power BI which you can find out more about here. If you are not already a subscriber, why not sign up at the bottom of any SumProduct web page? And don't forget to download the latest version of Power BI Desktop here too.
